The Newport Mansions are spectacular, but try to make the cliff walk.
If you're in a car you'll need to find parking and a way back to your car.
We parked along a public beach at the start of the walk and grabbed a shuttle bus ride back to our car.
The walk is 3.5 miles with the mansions on one side and the ocean on the other. Most of the walk is easy, but there is a stretch that requires some fancy footwork along the rocks.
The walk took us about an hour, there is no charge. I've added some photos below.
The walk is free
After Mansion tours and Cliff walks, you work up quiet an appetite. We wanted to try the White Horse Tavern in Newport, The Tavern has been around since 1673, and to be honest we expected it to be just a tourist stop, boy were we wrong. We had delicious meal in this unique old restaurant. We had great service, If you're in Newport I recommend grabbing a reservation and having dinner.
Before dinner, we had a few minutes to walk around the neighborhoods. Our stroll took us by St Mary's chruch in Newport.
This is the church where JFK and Jackie married. I understand the church is now open for tours, we were late in the day so we just walked around.
The next morning we visited the Tennis Hall of Fame in Newport. The Hall is at the Old Newport Casino. The building dates back to the 1800's, the hall has been on site since the 50's. Jimmy Van Allen made the hall happen, he is also the guy who created the tie-breaker.
For tennis players, fans and former players (like me), the hall is a must see. The exhibits are wonderful, the hosts are incredible. If you plan ahead you can play on the grass tennis courts.
The cost is reasonable (under $25), plan to spend a couple of hours there. There is a tournament and mid summer induction ceremonies so plan ahead.
I spent too much at the gift shop, but well worth it.
Our last evening in Rhode Island found us at Providence's Federal Hill. The Hill boasts a wonderful mix of old school Italian Restaurants,. Over the years I've dined at several, all were very good.
Providence has some beautiful old architecture and several schools worth visiting including Brown University.
This was a great four day getaway.
We flew in and out of Providence, if you can make that work I encourage it.. Providence is a breeze compared to Boston.
